Unit 1: Final Evaluation
During the course of unit one, I have researched many different artists that have a range of different style, techniques and ideas such as: Anna Atkins, Valerian Marguery, Stefan Sagmeister, Adde Adesokan and many more, For example Adde Adesokan's work influenced my work on one of my personal projects 'Fragments'. I was inspired by his work because it created a illusion using different parts of peoples body parts and it just stood out to me. He is a street photographer and started a project called 'triptychs of strangers' his purpose was to meet complete strangers on the street and snap three shots of their body (face, hands, feet) trying to reveal their stories and personality and then combine them into one triptych. I thought this was really cool and unique so I decided to use this idea for my final images for my project. I created my own images but made some interpretations, instead of having one person in a image, I took snaps of different people and mixed them up to make the image more interesting. Most of Adde's pictures are black and white but I decided to add colour to mine and different effects to give the images more 'life'.
I have experimented and used a wide range of techniques and processes throughout unit 1 such as: Pinhole Photography, Cyanotypes, Light painting, Photograms, Multiple Portraits and Camera obscuras. I really like Multiple portraits because it is something that i have never done before and i think it looks unreal. I also learnt how to use Photoshop which later helped me with my projects that include Photoshop such as my final Absurd project of unit 1.. I also enjoy light painting because it is definitely something different and really fun. I was surprised when i found out how to create it with simply a small light and drawing in the air to create a beautiful image.
Throughout unit 1, I have investigated six different personal projects; Fantastic and strange, Fragments, Street photography, Mobile Photography, Abstraction and Absurd. My first personal project was Mobile photography, we started off taking pictures of different shapes around the school using ipods because they were much more accessible than DLSR cameras and also they had different types of apps on them such as Hueless and HIpstamatic. These apps helped us add a effect on the images, for example if you wanted a black and white effect, Hueless will be the app you will use. I began experimenting with a app called Andigraf which has four different layout lenses and various effects. This app can take more than one shot and make them into one image.
My second personal project was Street photography, I didnt know much about what street photography really meant other than taking pictures on the street, but by watching the film ''Everybody Street' which talked about the experiences of street photography and we learnt what it was about. We then began to research street photographers, one artist that stood out to me was Jill Freedman, I like her images because they are all black and white which gives the old fashioned effect. Her images captured everyday things that happen such as 'children skipping and playing' but also some unusual subjects such as a elephant pushing a lion in a cage. This image really inspired me because its something you dont see everyday. Our first challenge in street photography was 'Ways of seeing' which we had to take a set of images responding to examples of street photography and making our own that uses these viewpoints, subjects and compositions.
Our second challenge was Diagonals, the idea came from the street photographer 'Erik Kim' that thought drama is created by using diagonal lines in street photography. I then went and took a set of images of diagonal lines around the school, I found it quite easy because everywhere you look at, there are diagonal lines. Our last challenge was The rule of thirds. Which is a set of grid lines divided into nine parts and is used to help compose a image.
For my third project that took 7 weeks, I decided to chose Fragments because i thought i could do a lot of different styles that include fragments. I first experimented using the app 'Tangent' on the ipod, this app put shapes and patterns over the image you took and made the image look more interesting but some didnt work because the patterns didnt fit the image. I then went on to taking a set of images with the device viewer which allow you to see a duplicate of the subject in the lense.
